In a direct address to students at the Russian University of Transport, Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama praised Russia’s long-standing partnership with the continent, describing it as rooted in solidarity rather than conditions.
“There is a lot that we have to do, and we believe partners like Russia, which has over the years shown a solid commitment to Africa with no strings attached, we see Russia as a true friend,” Mahama said. He referenced Russia’s historical support dating to African independence, including its role in the fight against apartheid and advocacy against colonialism, and urged even stronger solidarity in the present era
The remarks came during his engagement with students ahead of the university conferring an honorary doctorate on him the first time a sitting head of state has received the honour from the institution. The recognition highlighted his leadership in public service and contributions to Ghana’s transport infrastructure, education, and professional training.

Mahama used the occasion to outline practical priorities, including Ghana’s railway master plan. He described the current network as largely inherited from the colonial period and in poor condition, with plans to expand it in phases. Priority is the western corridor to Takoradi port (for cocoa, manganese, bauxite and other exports), onward to Kumasi, then north to Hamile and a link to Bobo-Dioulasso in Burkina Faso. The goal is dual: more efficient mineral and agricultural exports for Ghana, plus a dedicated corridor for Burkina Faso’s imports and exports (notably cotton). He also referenced broader transport efforts such as port and airport expansions, road reconstruction, and hopes of reviving Ghana Airways before the end of his tenure.
