The Nachtigal Hydroelectric Power Station: Powering Progress in Cameroon

Cameroon is on the brink of a significant leap forward in its energy sector with the upcoming inauguration of the Nachtigal Hydroelectric Power Station. This monumental project, poised to be operational in July 2024, represents not just a new chapter in the nation’s infrastructure but also a promise of sustainable development and economic growth.
Located on the Sanaga River, approximately 65 kilometres northeast of Yaoundé, the Nachtigal dam is a testament to the power of international cooperation and forward-thinking investment. With a consortium of ownership including Électricité de France, the International Finance Corporation, the Government of Cameroon, Africa50, and Stoa Infra & Energy, the project has garnered support from across the globe.
The dam, a roller-compacted concrete (RCC) gravity dam, will boast an installed capacity of 420 megawatts, powered by seven GE Francis turbines, each capable of generating 60 megawatts. This capacity is expected to boost Cameroon’s current electricity production by a staggering 30%, addressing a critical need for reliable power in a country where energy demand continues to grow at a rapid pace.

The construction of the Nachtigal dam has been a journey of ambition and resilience. Beginning in 2018, the project has navigated the complexities of engineering, environmental stewardship, and financial structuring to arrive at this pivotal moment. The estimated €1.2 billion investment underscores the scale and significance of the endeavour, with approximately €300 million raised internally by the NHPC consortium as equity investment.
As the dam nears completion, it stands as a symbol of hope for the people of Cameroon. The promise of stable electricity means more than just lights in homes; it signifies the potential for industrial growth, improved healthcare facilities, enhanced educational opportunities, and a stronger economy. The Nachtigal Hydroelectric Power Station is not just a source of power; it is a catalyst for transformation.
The impact of the Nachtigal dam extends beyond its immediate vicinity. A double circuit 225-kilovolt high voltage transmission line, measuring 50.3 kilometres in length, will transmit the generated power to a substation, integrating it into the national electricity grid. This infrastructure will ensure that the benefits of the dam are felt throughout the country, marking a significant step towards Cameroon’s goal of becoming an emerging economy by 2035.
As Cameroon stands on the cusp of this new era, the Nachtigal Hydroelectric Power Station serves as a beacon of progress, sustainability, and hope. It is a project that embodies the spirit of innovation and the relentless pursuit of a brighter future for all Cameroonians.
