Female Mayors from the North West Region, led by Annatou Abrams, have shared their concerns and the challenges faced by women with Governor Adolphe Lele Lafrique.
During their meeting on Thursday, November 21, 2024, the female Mayors expressed their grief over the recent killings of two of their colleagues: the Deputy Mayor of Elak Oku and Joko Frida, the Second Deputy Mayor of Bamenda II.
Highlighting the pivotal role women play in families, the Mayors stressed that the killing of women undermines the foundational unit of society. They urged the Governor to take all necessary steps to ensure the safety and protection of women in the crisis-affected North West Region. Referencing Rule 134 of International Humanitarian Law, which specifically protects women and children, the Mayors called on those bearing arms against the state to adhere to the rules of engagement and respect the fundamental rights of women and girls.
Mayor Annatou Abrams lamented, “The brutal manner in which our colleagues were killed is heartbreaking. The Deputy Mayor of Elak Oku was shot in church, while the Deputy Mayor of Bamenda II was forcibly taken from her home and later killed. What crimes did these women, who only sought to serve their communities, commit? Regrettably, innocent mothers are subjected to such violence.”
In response, Governor Adolphe Lele Lafrique thanked the women for their visit and emphasized the importance of resilience in the face of adversity. “We encourage more women to participate in politics. The progress North West women have made in the political arena mustn’t be compromised. We urge you to continue your efforts,” he stated.
Regarding security, the Governor advised the Mayors to be cautious about their movements and interactions. He cautioned them to be mindful of who they share information with and to report any uncertainties to the nearest security unit.
The female Mayors, including Mbu Alice (Mayor of Belo), Abong Esther (Second Deputy Mayor of Tubah), Mrs. Ndumu (First Deputy of Bamenda I), and Madam Chesi Miriam (First Deputy of Bafut), left the Governor’s office feeling hopeful about fostering unity and engaging their communities in development, despite the challenges they face.
This visit by the Female Mayors took place following the tragic killing of Mayor Joko Frida on October 27, 2024, in Bamenda.
