The Anglophone crisis in Cameroon has been ongoing for years, with the Southern Cameroons seeking independence or greater autonomy. According to Sako, president of the Interim Government of Ambazonia ( IG ), any negotiation must be based on equality principles, referencing Southern Cameroons’ equal status in 1961. Dr Sako made this revelation in a press conference he held from Washington DC October 4th 2024, while replying to questions from journalists.
On what if an All Anglophone conference was to hold to decide on the armed conflict? :
He emphasizes that true representation is crucial, stating that Cameroon’s parliament doesn’t legitimately represent Southern Cameroons. Sako believes that only those actively resisting in the struggle have the right to decide on solutions, not civil society organizations or all self-identified Anglophones.
Key Points from Sako’s Statement:
– Equality in Negotiation: Any talks must be based on equal status for Southern Cameroons.
– Legitimate Representation: Cameroon’s parliament doesn’t represent Southern Cameroons.
– True Representatives: Only those actively resisting have the right to decide on solutions.
– Definition of Southern Cameroons: It’s not just about being born or schooled there; true Southern Cameroonians are those fighting for their rights.
The crisis has led to the formation of various separatist groups and militias, with some considered as proxies to the Cameroon government according to the IG. The conflict has resulted in thousands of deaths, displacements, and human rights abuses.
Previous Attempts at Resolution:
– 2019 Talks: Mediated by Switzerland, but ultimately failed.
– Grand National Dialogue: Held in 2019, aimed to address the crisis, but its recommendations were not implemented.
A lasting solution requires addressing the root causes of the conflict, including historical grievances, cultural differences, and political representation as analysts put it.
Sako in the press conference said, ” Either we have a free Ambazonia and a free La Republic du Cameroon or La Republic ceased to exist”
