Cameroonian Football Club Presidents Demand Direct State Subsidies

In a significant move to address financial challenges, football club presidents in Cameroon have expressed their desire for state subsidies to be paid directly into the clubs’ bank accounts, bypassing the Cameroonian Football Federation (FECAFOOT). This demand follows numerous complaints over unpaid subsidies by the federation, which have hindered clubs’ ability to pay player bonuses, salaries, and meet other obligations.

Background of the Demand

The call for direct subsidies comes amid ongoing financial difficulties faced by clubs in the Elite One and Two championships. Club presidents have argued that the current system, where subsidies are channeled through FECAFOOT, has led to delays and inconsistencies in payments. These issues have exacerbated the financial strain on clubs, affecting their operations and performance.

Government Response

In response to the complaints, the Secretary-General of the Presidency of the Republic, Ferdinand Ngoh Ngoh, has instructed the Minister of Sports and Physical Education, Prof. Narcisse Mouelle Kombi, to address the situation and ease tensions. A consultation meeting was held on December 18, 2024, where the minister invited club presidents to discuss the government’s subsidy for the Elite One and Two championships, totaling over 360 million FCFA.

Agreement Reached

During the meeting, an agreement was reached to redistribute the state subsidy of 560 million FCFA directly to the clubs. The funds will be allocated as follows:

  • 2/3 for clubs in MTN Elite One
  • 1/3 for clubs in MTN Elite Two

This resolution, however, requires the approval of the Secretary-General of the Presidency of the Republic before it can be implemented.

Additional Support

In addition to the direct subsidies, the government has allocated 350 million FCFA to FECAFOOT for the organization of the professional championships for the 2024/2025 season. This amount is intended to cover various logistical aspects, including the payment of referees, stadium rentals, and general competition management.

Statements from Key Figures

Major figures in Cameroonian football, such as Faustin Domkeu (former vice-president of the LFPC), Joseph Feutcheu (president of Djiko FC), and Nya Norbert (Fauve Azur), participated in the discussions. Their involvement underscores the collective effort to ensure better governance and transparent distribution of resources in professional football.
