Meet Edwin Fongod Nuvaga, an exemplary Director General of the Cameroon Customs

Edwin Fongod Nuvaga is a prominent Cameroonian civil servant and the current Director General of Customs in Cameroon. He has held this strategic position since his appointment by presidential decree on December 21, 2015. A results-oriented general manager, a goal getter and as a matter of fact, a square peg in a square hole at the Cameroon customs administration.

Key Achievements and Career Highlights

  • Record Revenue Collection: Under his leadership, Cameroonian customs surpassed the XAF 1 trillion revenue mark for the first time in history in 2023, ending the year at XAF 1.0198 trillion.
  • Digitalization and Reform: He is credited with leading the modernization and digitalization of customs procedures to simplify payments and bolster security. He was awarded the “Best Digital Administration in Cameroon” award in 2024 for his efforts.
  • Anti-Smuggling Efforts: He initiated the Halcomi (Stop Illicit Trade) program, which has increased seizures of illicit substances and goods.
  • Distinguished Career: A 1989 graduate of the National School of Administration and the Judiciary (ENAM), he served in various key customs roles, including Head of the IT Division, before becoming Director General.

  • He was knighted with the medal of the Commander of the National Order of Valour in January 2025 by Minister of Finance Louis Paul Motaze.
  • He has held several international positions, including Vice Chairman of the World Customs Organization (WCO) for West and Central Africa.

Note: In late 2025 /early 2026, he has been active in promoting reforms related to electronic tax collection on imported items (telephones, tablets, iPhones, etc)
