The United States has returned $52.88 million in assets linked to Diezani Alison-Madueke, Nigeria’s former Minister of Petroleum Resources. This recovery is part of ongoing anti-corruption efforts between the two nations.
The funds were repatriated following a formal signing ceremony in Abuja, where Nigeria’s Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, announced the development. The recovered assets will be allocated as follows:
- $50 million will be directed through the World Bank to support rural electrification projects across Nigeria.
- The remaining $2.88 million will be allocated to the International Institute of Justice to strengthen the justice system and support anti-corruption initiatives.
This asset return is seen as a significant milestone in the partnership between Nigeria and the United States to combat corruption and uphold the rule of law. Both nations have reiterated their commitment to sustaining collaborative efforts in tackling corruption and strengthening institutional frameworks for accountability.
