President Bassirou Diomaye Faye terminated the functions of Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko. She dissolved the government on May 22, 2026, to resolve months of simmering political tensions and ideological clashes, mounting political strains and an open leadership rift between the two men. The dismissal caps months of growing friction within the country’s top leadership, giving analysts every reason to have seen this coming. The core reasons behind the termination of the Prime Minister and the collapse of the government include:
1. 𝗣𝗼𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 & 𝗜𝗱𝗲𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗹𝗮𝘀𝗵𝗲𝘀.
Despite being former allies and members of the PASTEF party, growing disagreements regarding governance and the nation’s political direction created a rift between Faye and Sonko.
2. 𝐎𝐩𝐞𝐧 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐏𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐜 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐭.
Though Faye and Sonko were staunch allies who rose to power together under the PASTEF movement, they transformed into bitter rivals. Sonko breached standard political protocol by publicly criticizing President Faye at a party meeting. He accused the President of a “laissez-faire” attitude, lacking authority, and failing to defend him or actively support government reforms.
3. 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗮𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗚𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗥𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺.
Political analysts point out that deep-seated ideological disagreements regarding the country’s economic management, policy direction, and executive governance had been building behind the scenes for months.
4. 𝗔 𝗙𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗣𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝗗𝘆𝗻𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗰.
In 2024, Sonko was legally disqualified from running for president due to a defamation conviction, which led him to designate Faye as the party’s replacement candidate. After their electoral victory, Sonko—who commands a massive youth following—struggled with his limited power as Prime Minister, creating a dual-leadership conflict with the actual head of state. Sonko openly questioned the leadership dynamics and demanded that Faye step up.
5. 𝗘𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲𝘀.
The political fallout occurs at a highly volatile time as Senegal grapples with a deepening national debt crisis, compounding the urgency for unified executive action and leading Faye to initiate a total reset of his administration.
6. 𝗘𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝗣𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝘆 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗮𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀
Analysts cited differing views on economic management and policy implementation as major catalysts for the dramatic government shake-up.
7. 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗣𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿
By dissolving the cabinet, President Faye has moved to assert executive authority, allowing him to reshape the government and select leaders who align with his specific vision for Senegal.
Oumar Samba Ba, the secretary-general of the presidency, announced the decree on state television (RTS) and confirmed that outgoing ministers will handle basic daily affairs until a new government is formed. Sonko reacted shortly after on social media, posting on X that he would “sleep with a light heart”.
