French Entrepreneur Launches Million-Dollar Chocolate Factory in Cameroon

In a remarkable fusion of French confectionery expertise and Cameroonian cocoa richness, entrepreneur Olivier Bordais has embarked on a delectable journey to establish a million-dollar chocolate factory in the heart of Cameroon. This ambitious project, named Chocolat Rouge, is a testament to Bordais’ decade-long chocolatier experience and a beacon of economic and social sustainability.

Nestled in Obala, a cocoa production hub just thirty kilometres north of Yaoundé, Chocolat Rouge is set to span an impressive 3,000 square meters. The groundbreaking ceremony, graced by the Minister of Commerce, Luc Magloire Mbarga Atangana, and the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Gabriel Mbaïrobe, marked the beginning of what is poised to be a significant boost to the local economy.

The factory, led by Bordais’ company Sas Manta, aims to produce high-end “Made in Cameroon” chocolate, leveraging the country’s rich cocoa resources. This initiative aligns perfectly with the government’s import substitution policy, which encourages local manufacturing and reduces reliance on imported goods. It’s a strategic move that promises to position Cameroon not only as a producer of premium cocoa but also as a manufacturer of exquisite chocolate products ready for the global market.

Chocolat Rouge’s establishment comes at a crucial time when Cameroon and other top cocoa-producing countries have experienced a decline in production, inadvertently hiking prices. This venture, therefore, presents an opportunity to revitalize the industry, offering a sustainable short-supply chain model that benefits all stakeholders, from the cocoa farmers in the Lékié basin to the consumers seeking quality chocolate.

The factory’s construction was unveiled following the Cameroon Cocoa Festival, which saw participation from 13 countries, highlighting the nation’s commitment to its cocoa sector. With the African Continental Free Exchange Zone in sight, Chocolat Rouge is not just a factory; it’s a symbol of Cameroon’s potential and its journey towards economic diversification and prosperity.

As the world’s appetite for chocolate grows, ventures like Chocolat Rouge are essential for meeting demand with a responsible and sustainable approach. It’s a blend of tradition and innovation, where the rich flavours of Cameroon’s cocoa can be transformed into chocolate delights by the skilled hands of a French chocolatier. This is more than just a business—it’s a cultural exchange, a sweet partnership that promises to enrich the palates and lives of many.
