Digitax platform allows Gabon to collect 258 billion CFA francs in tax revenue in 3 months
In a remarkable display of technological adaptation and fiscal management, Gabon has made headlines with its innovative Digitax platform. This digital system has been pivotal in the collection of an astounding 258 billion CFA francs in tax revenue within just three months of its implementation. The success of the Digitax platform is a testament to Gabon’s commitment to modernizing its tax administration and enhancing efficiency.
In Gabon, the Digitax platform for online payment of taxes and fiscal duties has enabled the State to collect 258 billion CFA francs in tax revenue. According to information recently published on the official page of the Ministry of Economy and Participations, this amount is the result of three months [between April and July 2024] of operation of the said platform. This platform, supported by the General Directorate of Taxes (DGI) of Gabon, was set up to boost the tax base, recovery, tax audits, dispute processing, as well as the payment of taxes by remote procedure. A strategy that is starting to bear fruit.
Launched last April, the platform aims to enable taxpayers to have better relations with the tax services and to make payments related to their activities, with complete peace of mind. “This development is perfectly in line with the modernization of public administration, decided by the highest authorities of the Republic, headed by the President of the Transition, Brigadier General Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, as well as the Prime Minister, Raymond Ndong Sima,” said Mays Mouissi, the Gabonese Minister of Economy. As a result, the country’s companies were required to fulfil all their tax obligations via the Internet, without the need to physically go to a tax centre.
It should be noted that this digital platform for collecting tax revenues is being implemented in a context where Gabon wants to further secure its revenues. Due to the cash payment of taxes, some corrupt tax collectors have come to embezzle public funds. It is therefore to limit this type of risk that the State decided to digitalize this service. According to the Gabonese Ministry of Economy, between September 2023 and February 2024, on a target of 419.5 billion CFA francs, the tax authorities mobilized 558.6 billion in tax revenues. This represents a surplus of 139.1 billion CFA francs for a realization rate of 133.1%. With the digitalization of tax procedures, the country’s DGI hopes to do better in terms of revenue mobilization. This could make it possible to achieve a budget set at 4,162 billion CFA francs by the end of 2024.
The Digitax platform was launched on April 8, 2024, as part of the Gabonese government’s initiative to digitize and streamline the tax obligations of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The platform’s introduction marked a significant shift from traditional, physical tax centres to a more accessible online system. This transition not only simplifies the tax payment process for businesses but also ensures a more robust and transparent collection mechanism for the state.
One of the most notable achievements of the Digitax platform is the substantial increase in tax revenue compared to the previous year. In April 2023, tax revenue amounted to 88 million dollars, whereas, in April 2024, following the launch of Digitax, the revenue nearly doubled to 179 million dollars. This remarkable increase highlights the platform’s effectiveness in combating tax evasion and optimizing revenue collection.
The Digitax platform encompasses an integrated management system for all fiscal processes, including tax assessment, collection, audit, dispute resolution, and online tax payments. By providing a one-stop digital solution for tax-related matters, the platform has significantly reduced the administrative burden on businesses and tax authorities alike.
Moreover, the initiative aligns with Gabon’s broader economic goals. The country aims to collect nearly 2.8 billion dollars in tax revenue for the year, a substantial increase from the 2.4 billion dollars targeted in the previous fiscal year. The Digitax platform is central to achieving this ambitious goal, as it not only enhances revenue collection but also fosters a more business-friendly environment by easing tax compliance.
The success of the Digitax platform in Gabon serves as an inspiring model for other nations seeking to modernize their tax systems. It demonstrates the power of digital transformation in governance and its potential to significantly impact a country’s fiscal health and administrative efficiency.
As Gabon continues to harness the benefits of the Digital platform, it sets a precedent for the integration of technology in public administration, paving the way for a future where digital solutions drive development and prosperity.
