The Alliance for Peace and Justice (APJ) has proposed a referendum on independence for the Anglophone regions of Cameroon by 2030. This proposal was made during the 17th session of the United Nations Forum on Minority Issues in Geneva, Switzerland. The APJ advocates for a peaceful resolution to the ongoing Anglophone crisis, which began in 2016 as peaceful protests against perceived marginalization and has since escalated into an armed conflict.
The APJ’s vision includes granting limited autonomy to the Anglophone regions, allowing them to manage local governance, education, economic development, healthcare, and policing. They believe this framework would address grievances, protect former combatants, and provide a pathway to a peaceful and inclusive resolution.
The APJ has called on the United Nations to support its vision and help facilitate a peaceful resolution that respects the identity and rights of the Anglophone population.
