In a recent event that has sparked discussions across Cameroon, A group of French-speaking youths posed as Southwesterners to express gratitude to President Paul Biya for the establishment of a higher teachers training college (ENS) in Buea. This act has been met with mixed reactions, as it raises questions about the authenticity of the support and the underlying motives.
The ENS Buea was created by a presidential decree on May 24, 2024, and is expected to be part of the University of Buea. Some see the creation of this institution as a strategic move to address the issue of rampant youth unemployment and as a potential solution to the ongoing Anglophone Crisis, which has roots in feelings of marginalization and underdevelopment in the English-speaking regions of Cameroon.
Abwa Takang, the South West president of the Cameroon National Youth Council (CNYC), emphasized the importance of acknowledging the fulfilment of a long-standing request by the Southwesterners for the establishment of such an institution. He also highlighted the role of joblessness in fueling the armed conflict in the English-speaking regions, suggesting that the ENS could serve as a permanent solution to these challenges.
However, the sincerity of the youths who marched to the Governor’s office has been called into question, as many were unable to express themselves in English, the primary language of the South West region. This discrepancy has led to speculations that pro-regime elites in the South West may have orchestrated the march as a political manoeuvre ahead of the upcoming elections.
The situation in Buea reflects the complex interplay of politics, education, and youth activism in Cameroon. It underscores the need for genuine dialogue and sustainable development strategies that can address the root causes of social and political unrest. As Cameroon approaches a pivotal election, the actions and voices of its youth will undoubtedly play a crucial role in shaping the country’s future.
