ATI BONISA Secures FCFA 113 Billion Contract for Bekoko-Limbe-Idenau Road Rehabilitation
The Ministry of Public Works (MINTP) has contracted ATI BONISA to rehabilitate the 93-kilometer road linking Bekoko to Limbe and Idenau in the South West Region. This project, which also includes rehabilitating a 10-kilometer stretch connecting Mutengene to Buea, will cost FCFA 113,179,432,546. The contract was signed in November 2024, and the project is expected to last 12 months.
The roads in question have been in poor condition for years, with potholes and inadequate drainage systems causing frequent flooding during the rainy season. The rehabilitation will maintain the current road width but increase pavement thickness by adding more tar, and some sections will be widened to improve traffic flow.
However, this raises a significant question: why is this road being rehabilitated again when it was among the over 2000 km that the same ministry claimed was repaired between 2016 and 2023? According to the Ministry of Public Works, they reported the successful construction and completion of 2,075.19 kilometers of new roads and the rehabilitation of 994.7 km of roads during that period. Despite these claims, some of the rehabilitated roads, including the Bekoko-Limbe-Idenau road, remain in poor condition and require further rehabilitation.
This situation highlights ongoing challenges in road maintenance and infrastructure development in the region. It also underscores the need for more effective and sustainable solutions to ensure the longevity and quality of road projects.
