Cameroon extends HeadCount
The Prime Minister, Chief Dr Joseph Dion Ngute has extended the ongoing national census for a second time, pushing the deadline from July 31 to September 15, 2026, as authorities scramble to complete the country’s first population count in two decades.
Dion Ngute signed the new directive on July 30, granting an additional six weeks for the combined operations of the 4th General Population and Housing Census (RGPH-4) and the Agriculture and Livestock Census (RGAE).
The census, which began on April 24, was initially scheduled to end on May 29. It was first extended to July 31, and now to September 15.
The extension, the PM’s release states, aims to complete enumeration by strengthening coverage of households, persons, and agricultural holdings across the national territory.
Census teams are tasked with identifying and enumerating households, individuals, and farms not yet counted, while verifying complete geographical coverage and intensifying communication to encourage public participation.
The extension comes as authorities grapple with persistent challenges, including payment delays for census agents, logistical difficulties in reaching remote areas, and the complexity of conducting simultaneous population and agricultural surveys.
