CAMEROON IGNORES HISTORY BY DOWNPLAYING THE 64TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE FOUMBAN ABORTIVE CONFERENCE

Today, July 17th, marks the 64th anniversary of the Foumban Conference, which ended with proposals rather than a resolution. For historical evidence and scholars on Cameroon politics, I offer the following quotes about the Foumban Conference. 1″As the British Southern Cameroons’ Nationalism Conflict Continues to wax and wane in the tradition of many protracted conflicts, the people of former British Cameroon live with a sense of deception in present-day Republique du Cameroun, the direct result of the Foumban so-called  ‘Constitutional Talks’. Fonkem Achankeng Foumban 1″Constitutional Talks’ and Prior Intentions of Negotiations: Theoretical Analysis of a False Negotiation and Ramifications for Political Developments in Cameroon. 2.”A federal structure, is therefore would be the only one which suits our particular situation, for I want to emphasis here very strongly that it is not our purpose to build, in the absolute, an ideal state cut off from it’s roots, neither is it to prepare a constitution based on abstract theories” President Ahidjo in a speech at Foumban Conference.3.”The political Barons of Foumban have left behind only vague memories and checkered political legacy..” Dr Nfor Nwayuke Susungi in “Can A Country that has declared itself dead be saved by Democracy?”

It is pure political bad faith for the Cameroon government to ignore the relevance of the Foumban in fighting the current war with the Southern Cameroons. Worst of all is the non-philosophical silence by the Cameroon historians. Cameroonian Historians had gone on to discuss the Cameroonian political hot potato called the Foumban Conference. The inconvenient truth is that the cut problem in Cameroon, called the Anglophone Crisis, can never be well handled without a return to review and implement the proposals of the Foumban Conference.
