Cameroonian Football Crisis Resolved with Presidential Intervention

Months of tension in Cameroonian football culminated in a resolution orchestrated by President Paul Biya. The dispute between the Cameroonian Football Federation (FECAFOOT) led by Samuel Eto’o and the Ministry of Sports (MINSEP) under Narcisse Mouelle Kombi, centred on the management of the national team, the Indomitable Lions.

On May 30th, Minister Kombi called an emergency meeting for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers. Notably, Eto’o chose not to attend and sent a representative. The same day, President Biya intervened, expressing his displeasure with the situation and directing his frustration towards Ferdinand Ngoh Ngoh, the Presidential Secretary-General, for failing to implement his earlier directive for a “hybrid solution” with Brys and Cameroonian staff.

President Biya then mandated the installation of this hybrid staff and tasked Samuel Mvondo Ayolo, Director of the Civil Cabinet, to ensure compliance. With support from First Lady Chantal Biya, Eto’o reinstated coach Marc Brys and called him for a meeting later that day. Brys, initially hesitant, eventually attended with the involvement of the presidency and the Belgian ambassador.

The meeting, now without Kombi’s advisor Cyrille Ntollo, saw Brys offer an apology to Eto’o, followed by a reciprocal apology from Eto’o to Brys and the public. Finally, late that night, FECAFOOT published the official list of the hybrid coaching staff, with a source close to the presidency citing delays due to the Ministry’s slow processing of approvals for Cameroonian staff members.
