Government Breaks Silence on Idabato Mayor’s Kidnapping After Over 50 Days

The Cameroon government has finally responded to the kidnapping of the Divisional Officer (DO) of Idabato, Ewane Roland, and a municipal official, Etongo Ismael, after 53 days of captivity. In a statement dated November 22, the government expressed disdain for the act, which was carried out by armed pirates from a neighboring country. The government condemned the kidnapping as an “odious, cowardly and despicable act” and described the treatment of the captives as “extremely cruel physical abuse and inhuman and degrading”.

The government assured that everything possible is being done to preserve the lives of the kidnapped officials and to secure their release. The Divisional Officer and the municipal official were kidnapped on October 1, 2024, and were reportedly taken to Nigeria by their captors. The government has been working on diplomatic and security measures to ensure their safe return.

The delay in the government’s response has drawn criticism from various quarters, with many questioning the effectiveness and urgency of the measures being taken. The families of the kidnapped officials have been living in a state of anxiety and uncertainty, hoping for the safe return of their loved ones. The government has reiterated its commitment to resolving the situation and bringing the perpetrators to justice.

In addition to the diplomatic efforts, the government has also increased security measures in the region to prevent further incidents. This includes deploying additional security forces and enhancing surveillance to monitor and respond to any potential threats. The government has called on the international community to support its efforts in securing the release of the kidnapped officials and addressing the broader issue of piracy and kidnapping in the region.

The kidnapping of the Idabato officials is part of a larger pattern of insecurity and violence in the region, which has been exacerbated by the presence of armed groups and criminal networks. The government has acknowledged the need for a comprehensive approach to address these challenges, including strengthening law enforcement, improving regional cooperation, and addressing the root causes of insecurity.
