Iranโs President, Masoud Pezeshkian, has appeared on state television in what appeared to be a recorded message, expressing condolences over the death of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and announcing the activation of an interim leadership structure.
In his address, Pezeshkian described the passing of Ayatollah Khamenei as a profound national loss, saying the โsorrow will remain in the minds of people for a long time.โ
Iranian state media reports that Pezeshkian is part of a three-member interim leadership committee formed to prevent a power vacuum while the countryโs clerical establishment selects the next supreme leader. The committee is said to include Judiciary Chief Gholam-Hossein Mohseni-Eje’i and senior cleric Ali Reza Arafi.
During his televised remarks, the president also struck a defiant tone on security matters, stating that Iranโs armed forces would โdisappointโ the countryโs enemies and were currently โcrushing the enemyโs bases.โ
Approximately 30 minutes before the broadcast, Pezeshkian posted on X that the recent onslaught against Iran would โnot disrupt the resolve of the government of the Islamic Republic to carry out its duties and responsibilities.โ
The developments come at a sensitive moment for Iran, as authorities move swiftly to ensure continuity in leadership while regional tensions remain high.
