Six Arrested in Garoua Anti-Corruption Campaign, CONAC Reports

The National Anti-Corruption Commission (CONAC) has announced the arrest of six individuals in Garoua, Cameroon, on corruption charges. This announcement was made during a press conference held by the President of CONAC, Rev. Dr. Dieudonné Massi Gams, in the presence of Governor Jean Abate Edi’i.

The arrests were part of a five-day anti-corruption campaign called “Clinique anticorruption,” which aimed to address and combat corruption in the region. During this campaign, 43 cases of corruption were reported and immediately investigated. The individuals arrested have been handed over to the justice system for further legal proceedings.

CONAC’s efforts are part of a broader initiative to tackle corruption in Cameroon, which has caused significant financial losses to the state. According to CONAC’s 2023 report, the country suffered financial damages amounting to over 114 billion CFA francs due to corruption and related offenses.

Despite the challenges, CONAC remains determined to fight corruption and improve transparency and accountability within the public sector. The recent arrests highlight the ongoing efforts to address this pervasive issue and bring those responsible to justice.

The “Clinique anticorruption” campaign involved a series of activities, including public awareness sessions, workshops, and direct engagement with the community to educate them about the dangers of corruption and how to report it. The campaign also provided a platform for citizens to voice their concerns and share information about corrupt practices in their localities.

Governor Jean Abate Edi’i praised the efforts of CONAC and emphasized the importance of community involvement in the fight against corruption. He urged citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the authorities. The governor also highlighted the need for continued collaboration between government agencies, civil society, and the public to create a corruption-free environment.

The arrests in Garoua are seen as a significant step towards restoring public trust in the government and its institutions. By holding corrupt individuals accountable, CONAC aims to send a strong message that corruption will not be tolerated and that those who engage in such practices will face severe consequences.
