Toothless ECOWAS Barks at Guinea-Bissau’s Military Junta

ECOWAS has rejected the transition plan announced by Guinea-Bissau’s military rulers after they ousted President Umaro Sissoco Embalo and is demanding a rapid return to constitutional rule. The regional bloc has called for the release of political detainees and an inclusive and short transition period.

ECOWAS warned that it would impose targeted sanctions on those obstructing the process and announced plans to send a high-level delegation to engage with the junta, emphasizing zero tolerance for unconstitutional changes of government.
