The Diocese of Buea, Cameroon’s Oldest, Launches 75th Anniversary Celebrations
The Roman Catholic Diocese of Buea, the first established in Cameroon, kicked off its year-long 75th-anniversary celebration on April 18, 2024. Bishop Michael Bibi led a solemn Mass at the Divine Mercy Co-Cathedral in Buea to begin the festivities.
Commemorating the diocese’s 1950 establishment, these celebrations will focus on faith, unity, and progress. A highlight includes hosting the annual Bishops’ Seminar in Buea from January 4th to 11th, 2025. Additionally, the Divine Mercy Co-Cathedral will be consecrated as the Bishop Pius Awa Memorial Center on January 5th, marking a significant milestone.
Celebrations will extend throughout the year, encompassing all seven deaneries within the diocese. Parishes and congregations will come together for joyful events. Special gatherings with prayer and action groups will foster spiritual unity and fellowship. The diocese also plans to engage with educational institutions and service organizations, emphasizing the importance of faith in all aspects of community life.
Completing construction projects at the pastoral center is another key aspect of the anniversary activities. This will enhance the diocese’s ability to serve its members effectively.
“Understanding the importance of these structures, the Christians are excited to ensure the bishops have proper accommodations,” said Bishop Michael Bibi. He expressed confidence that both the Divine Mercy Co-Cathedral’s interior, basement, and the bishop’s residence will be completed by December, thanks to the generosity of the church and its supporters.
