Maize Importation in Cameroon Skyrockets, Up 229% from Last Year

In 2023, Cameroon experienced a significant shift in its agricultural import patterns, particularly concerning maize. The country saw its maize imports increase by a remarkable 229%, reaching the highest volume in five years. This surge is a clear indicator of the changing dynamics in Cameroon’s food security and agricultural policies.

The increase in maize imports can be attributed to several factors. One of the primary reasons is the fluctuation in local production capabilities. Despite efforts to boost local agriculture, such as the commissioning of a maize processing plant within the Compagnie Fermière du Cameroun (CFC) in November 2021, there have been challenges that necessitated this reliance on imports. The CFC, aiming to support local farmers and reduce imports, faced a slowdown in production, which could be one of the contributing factors to the surge in imports.

Another aspect to consider is the demand from the national poultry sector, where maize constitutes a significant portion of animal feed. With 80% of the feed comprising maize, any disruption in local supply can have a substantial impact on the sector, leading to increased imports to meet the demand.

The economic implications of this surge are multifaceted. On one hand, it reflects a gap in local agricultural production that needs to be addressed. On the other hand, it presents an opportunity for international trade and relations, as evidenced by the entry of five new countries into Cameroon’s top 10 suppliers list in 2023.

The situation also highlights the importance of agricultural resilience in the face of challenges such as climate change, conflicts, and market fluctuations. The Food and Agriculture Organization’s report on Cameroon points out that crop production in 2023 continued to be affected by conflicts and climate conditions, leading to high prices for locally produced maize and imported rice.

Looking ahead, Cameroon must invest in sustainable agricultural practices, improve supply chain management, and develop policies that support local production while maintaining the flexibility to engage in international trade. The surge in maize imports serves as a wake-up call for the nation to reassess its agricultural strategies and ensure food security for its population.
