Former Cameroon international striker Jean Manga Onguéné died this Tuesday, October 6, 2026, in Paris, following an illness. He was 80 years old. The news was made public by Allez les Lions, a media outlet specializing in Cameroonian football.
A major figure in national football, he spent most of his career with Canon Yaoundé, where he remains one of the club’s greatest legends. His record with the club is exceptional: six Cameroon championship titles and six Cameroon Cups. He also won the African Champions League three times, as well as the African Cup Winners’ Cup.
Individually, he was crowned African Ballon d’Or winner, a distinction that established him among the continent’s top players.
After his playing career, he continued his journey in coaching. He became the first Cameroonian coach to lead the Indomitable Lions to the quarter-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations.
