Hysacam, Cameroon’s leading private waste management company, has secured a contract worth over CFA45 billion for waste management in Yaoundé. This contract was awarded by the Urban Community of Yaoundé (CUY) following an international tender launched in June 2024. Out of the four lots offered in the contract, Hysacam won three, while the tender for the fourth lot was declared unsuccessful.
This contract comes amidst an ongoing waste management crisis in Yaoundé, which has been persisting for years. Factors contributing to the crisis include rapid population growth, lack of discipline among citizens, and insufficient financial resources allocated to waste collection. Despite the introduction of a special excise duty on waste collection in the 2019 finance law, the funds collected have not been sufficient to cover the needs of decentralized local governments.
Hysacam’s role in this new contract is pivotal, as the company will be responsible for waste collection and street cleaning in multiple districts of Yaoundé. The five-year contracts will focus on essential waste management tasks, including the collection of household waste, street sweeping, and cleaning of public markets. These actions are crucial to reducing congestion and restoring cleanliness to the city.
The government has also increased security measures in the region to prevent further incidents. This includes deploying additional security forces and enhancing surveillance to monitor and respond to any potential threats. The government has called on the international community to support its efforts in securing the release of the kidnapped officials and addressing the broader issue of piracy and kidnapping in the region.
Hysacam’s efforts are part of a broader initiative to tackle the waste management crisis in Yaoundé. The company has been working closely with local authorities to develop sustainable waste management solutions that can address the city’s growing needs. This includes investing in modern waste collection and processing technologies, as well as implementing public awareness campaigns to educate citizens about the importance of proper waste disposal.
The success of Hysacam’s waste management initiatives in Yaoundé could serve as a model for other cities in Cameroon and beyond. By demonstrating the effectiveness of comprehensive waste management strategies, Hysacam hopes to inspire other municipalities to adopt similar approaches and improve their waste management systems.
The contract also highlights the importance of public-private partnerships in addressing urban challenges. By leveraging the expertise and resources of private companies like Hysacam, local governments can enhance their capacity to manage waste and other critical services. This collaboration is essential for creating sustainable and livable cities that can meet the needs of their growing populations.
