Batibo Drivers Union President Fatally Shot in Bamenda Amid Ongoing Unrest

The president of the Batibo Drivers Union, identified as Robert, was tragically shot and killed in Bamenda on January 8, 2025. The attack occurred early in the morning along the Bamenda-Mbengwi road, between 5:30 and 6 a.m., near Nchualam in the Bamenda II subdivision. Eyewitnesses reported that Robert was traveling with three other passengers when their vehicle came under heavy gunfire. While Robert suffered fatal wounds, the other three occupants survived and continued their journey.

This incident has raised suspicions about whether the killing was a targeted attack or part of a broader grudge. No separatist group has claimed responsibility for the attack, but residents suspect the involvement of non-state armed groups, given the region’s history of unrest and insecurity. Robert was widely regarded as a jovial and philanthropic figure within his community, having recently made a significant donation to a charity organization.

This tragic event highlights the ongoing security challenges in the Northwest region, where there are widespread allegations of score-settling amid a separatist armed conflict. The community remains in shock and mourning over the loss of a respected leader.
