Today, the Social Democratic Front Political Party marks of their the 36th Anniversary of its historic struggle for democracy in Cameroon.
In a post on their social media handle, they wrote
βWe pay tribute to the six brave Cameroonians who lost their lives on May 26, 1990, during the launch of the SDF in Bamenda. Their sacrifice remains a symbol of courage and the fight for freedom.β
The SDF was launched this day in Bamenda on May 26th 1990, by the Late emblematic Ni John Fru Ndi. This marked the return to multi-party politics in Cameroon since its abolition by Ahidjo in 1966, when he merged all political parties to form a one-party government (The Cameroon National Union- CNU, later renamed CPDM by the Biya clique)
In its 36 years, the SDF has remained a strong force, winning the 1992 presidential election in Cameroon before the victory was seized, winning several seats in parliament and the Senate, and controlling several municipalities until the outbreak of the Anglophone crisis, which reduced its dominance in key areas of Anglophone Cameroon.
The SDF is todayΒ chaired by Hon.Β Joshua Osih, who has been doing everything possible to modernise and reorganiseΒ the party.
The party is currently fine-tuning ways to get back into the top as a major opposition party in Cameroon.
