Embezzlement Scandal: Conac Seeks Detention of Paul Atanga Nji in Cameroon 2024

In 2011, a damning report from the National Anti-Corruption Commission (Conac) shook Cameroon, revealing a vast scandal of public funds embezzlement within the Cameroon Postal Services (Campost). Among the accused was Paul Atanga Nji, then a special advisor at the Presidency of the Republic and current permanent secretary of the National Security Council. Conac strongly recommended the initiation of legal proceedings against these individuals, but to date, no action has been taken.
Serious accusations
The Conac report highlighted dubious financial practices and massive embezzlement of funds within Campost. The Conac audit mission revealed significant anomalies, including:
Paul Atanga Nji in the crosshairs
Paul Atanga Nji, at the time a special advisor at the Presidency of the Republic and president of the National Security Council, was among the individuals explicitly accused by Conac. The report implicates him in several cases of fund embezzlement, particularly the opaque management of the subsidiary Tecsult.
A previous damning report
A previous report by the Supreme State Audit on the management of Campost had already implicated Paul Atanga Nji, citing embezzlements of several million CFA francs.
Lack of judicial follow-up
Despite the grave allegations levelled against Paul Atanga Nji and other prominent figures, there has been a noticeable absence of any legal action being taken so far. This lack of response from the authorities not only raises numerous questions but also further stokes suspicions of potential complicity within the government’s ranks.
The recent scandal involving the embezzlement of public funds at Campost is a glaring testament to the enduring prevalence of corruption in Cameroon. The allegations against Paul Atanga Nji, a senior government official, are particularly weighty and shed light on the apparent immunity enjoyed by certain individuals within the system. It is paramount that the judiciary takes decisive action in addressing this case and ensures that those found responsible are held answerable for their actions.
