The Inauguration of Bertoua Referral Hospital: A Milestone for Cameroon’s Healthcare

On June 10, 2024, a significant advancement in healthcare was celebrated in Bertoua, the capital of Cameroon’s East Region. The Prime Minister, Joseph Dion Ngute, inaugurated the Bertoua Referral Hospital, marking a new era for medical services in the region. The new referral hospital stands as the largest healthcare facility in the region, equipped with 102 beds, including 90 for general hospitalization and 12 for intensive care. The hospital is organized into 12 main buildings, each serving a critical function, from an operation unit to an emergency unit, and even a medical imaging unit complete with modern equipment like scanners and ultrasound machines.

This development is part of a broader initiative by President Paul Biya to bolster the healthcare sector across Cameroon. The plan includes the construction of two regional hospitals and eight referral hospitals throughout the country’s ten regions. The completion of the Bertoua referral hospital is a testament to the government’s commitment to this vision.

However, the journey to this inauguration was not without its challenges. Similar projects in the English-speaking North West and South West Regions have faced delays due to security concerns. The stalled projects in areas like Buea and Bamenda highlight the complexities of infrastructure development amidst socio-political unrest.

Despite these challenges, the opening of the Bertoua Referral Hospital is a beacon of progress. In the seven weeks since it began operations on April 19, 2024, the hospital has already conducted over 700 consultations. The facility boasts a blood bank, established through a donation campaign by the hospital staff, and a team of around 250 professionals, including 16 medical doctors and specialists in various fields.

The hospital’s impact extends beyond its walls.
