The Matazem-Bamenda Road: A Journey of Progress and Development

The construction of the Matazem-Bamenda road, a vital artery in the North West Region of Cameroon, has reached a significant milestone, with over 50% of the project completed. This road is not just a pathway of tar and concrete; it represents a beacon of progress and hope for the local communities and the nation at large.

Spanning an 18 km stretch, the road promises to enhance connectivity between Matazem and Bamenda, fostering economic growth and facilitating smoother travel for residents and visitors alike. The Ministry of Public Works (MINTP) has reported a satisfactory progression in the construction efforts, with a completion rate of 53% as of April 25, 2024.

The project includes the tarring of the road and the rehabilitation of a 23-kilometer section from Mile 11 in Santa Subdivision to Three Corners Awing, passing through the scenic Lake Awing, a UNESCO heritage center. This particular stretch has reached 25% completion, with rights-of-way cleared and essential structures like prefabricated scupper elements fully produced[1].

The Babadjou-Bamenda road, which integrates with the Matazem-Bamenda stretch, has also seen substantial progress. The physical works on the 17 km route from Babadjou to Matazem stood at an impressive 93% completion as of mid-March 2024[2]. This near-completion status is a testament to the dedication and hard work of all parties involved, despite the challenges posed by the armed conflict in the Northwest and Southwest Regions.

One of the most challenging areas, Matazem, has now been made accessible with a fully tarred road from Babadjou to Bamenda. The project has laid 18,050 km of subgrade, 13 km of subbase, and 6 km of bituminous graded aggregate courses. Additionally, concrete ditches have been constructed over 5.1 km out of the planned 14.4 km[1].

The road construction has faced delays over the years, but the renewed commitment from the government, spurred by President Paul Biya’s emphasis on the road’s completion in his 2023 end-of-year speech, has reignited the momentum. The completion of this road is eagerly anticipated, as it is expected to alleviate the travel nightmares faced by commuters in the region and unlock new opportunities for trade and tourism.

The journey of the Matazem-Bamenda road is a narrative of resilience and determination. It is a story that underscores the importance of infrastructure in nation-building and the transformative power it holds. As the project moves towards completion, it carries with it the aspirations of a people and the promise of a brighter, more connected future.
