Cameroonian Activists arrested in Gabon, pleads for mercy Ramon Cotta in 2024
The recent arrest of Cameroonian activists in Gabon has sparked a wave of concern and discussion among human rights organizations and the international community. The incident, involving an anti-government activist known as Ramon Cotta, real name Akame Steve, has highlighted the complex political and social challenges facing activists within the Central African region.
Ramon Cotta’s arrest and subsequent extradition to Cameroon, where he was seen pleading for mercy in a video, raises questions about the legal processes involved in such cross-border detentions. The involvement of both Gabonese and Cameroonian authorities in the arrest, as well as the role of the Cameroonian Ambassador to Gabon, Mrs. Édith Ondoua Ateba, suggests a coordinated effort between the two nations.
This situation is not isolated. In Cameroon, there have been reports of activists being repeatedly questioned by authorities, especially following investigative reports that expose issues such as workplace accidents and environmental pollution. Such actions by the government have been perceived as attempts to suppress dissent and control the narrative around sensitive topics.
The plight of Ramon Cotta and other activists in similar situations has brought to light the need for greater protection of human rights and freedom of speech in the region. It underscores the importance of international laws and conventions that safeguard individuals who speak out against corruption and other societal issues.
As the story unfolds, the global community must monitor the treatment of activists and ensure that their rights are upheld. The call for mercy by Ramon Cotta is a poignant reminder of the personal risks faced by those who dare to challenge the status quo and advocate for change.

An anti-government activist, Ramon Cotta had gone missing with friends and family not knowing his whereabouts. But a recent video shared online shows Ramon in handcuffs pleading for mercy from President Paul Biya.
Reports said Ramon was arrested in Gabon and extradited to Cameroon, but the reports do not specify whether he was arrested by Cameroonian or Gabonese Police.
However, in the video, a Commissioner of Police in Cameroon, possibly serving in the South region could be seen standing beside the victim. Other persons who seemed to be security operatives from Gabon were also present.
“I am just a child, I plead for mercy from my father, President Paul Biya… I did not know what I was doing, I was deceived by my friends,” He pleaded.
It is reported that the arrest was spearheaded by the Ambassador of Cameroon to Gabon, Mrs. Édith Ondoua Ateba.
Cotta whose real name is Akame Steve, has been a strong critic of the Biya regime, denouncing corruption and other vices.
