Akere Muna strikes on the Cameroon government gold scams
“Cameroonβs leading anti-corruption crusader and former presidential candidate, Akere Muna, has raised a powerful alarm over what he calls the systematic looting of the nationβs gold. In a detailed report published on Facebook, Muna reveals shocking discrepancies between the gold Cameroon claims to export and what Dubai records as imports, a gap so massive it exposes a coordinated network of smuggling, under-invoicing, and high-level corruption.
According to Muna, Cameroon declared only $0.8 million in gold exports to the UAE between 2019β2020, while Dubai recorded $340 million worth of imports from Cameroon during the same period, over 400 times more. He insists this cannot be a mistake but evidence of a criminal system siphoning national wealth. Muna draws parallels to the Glencore bribery scandal, warning that Cameroonβs suspension from the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) shows the nation is still deeply entangled in opaque practices. From gold fields to offshore oil rigs, he says a βstate-capture machineβ continues to rob Cameroonians of resources meant to improve their lives. The fight for transparency, he warns, is far from over.
