Cameroon’s Banana Exports: A Resilient Growth Amidst Challenges

Cameroon’s Banana Exports Up 15% in August 2024 Despite CDC’s 19% Drop

In August 2024, Cameroon’s banana export sector witnessed a significant upturn, with a 15% increase in exports compared to the same month the previous year. This growth is particularly noteworthy considering the 19% decline in exports from the Cameroon Development Corporation (CDC), one of the country’s primary producers. The resilience of the sector, despite the CDC’s downturn, highlights the dynamic nature of Cameroon’s agricultural export industry.

The Banana Association of Cameroon (Assobacam) reported that the country exported 16,105 tons of bananas in August 2024. This increase is a testament to the robust strategies and efforts of local producers, especially in the face of challenges faced by the CDC. The CDC’s drop in exports can be attributed to various factors, which are yet to be fully analyzed, but the overall growth in the sector suggests a positive trajectory for the nation’s economy.

Leading the charge in this export surge is Plantations du Haut Penja (PHP), a subsidiary of the French company Compagnie Fruitière de Marseille, which saw a 14.3% rise in exports, amounting to 11,424 tons. This growth not only solidifies PHP’s position in the market but also underscores the importance of international partnerships and investments in bolstering Cameroon’s export capabilities.

Another remarkable success story is that of Compagnie des Bananes de Mondoni (CDBM), which experienced a staggering 490% increase in exports, shipping 1,102 tons in August 2024. This impressive performance is CDBM’s second-highest since its inception in June 2023, following the 1,208 tons exported in April 2024. The rapid emergence of CDBM as a significant player in the market is a clear indicator of the potential for growth and development within Cameroon’s banana industry.

The data from Assobacam also reveals that Compagnie Fruitière de Marseille, through its subsidiaries PHP and CDBM, controlled about 78% of Cameroon’s banana market in August 2024, with a combined export volume of 12,526 tons. This dominance is a reflection of the company’s strategic positioning and operational excellence.

Boh Plantations, another key producer, regained its third-place ranking in July 2024 and continued to perform well with a 23.4% increase in exports in August 2024. The consistent performance of these producers is crucial for the sustainability and expansion of the banana export sector.

Bananas are a vital source of export revenue for Cameroon, with Europe being the main destination. The United Kingdom alone accounted for 13% of Cameroon’s banana exports, generating nearly €10 million. The National Institute of Statistics (INS) reported that in 2023, Cameroon exported CFA42.9 billion worth of bananas to G7 countries, including Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

The upward trend in Cameroon’s banana exports is a positive sign for the country’s agricultural sector and its economy at large. It demonstrates the resilience of local producers and the strategic importance of fostering international partnerships. As Cameroon continues to navigate the global market, the contributions of both established and emerging players will be instrumental in maintaining this growth momentum and ensuring the economic stability provided by this key export commodity.
