The Disappearance of Cameroon Head of State Raises Eyebrows

JUST IN: Cameroon President Paul Biya’s Long Absence Raises Questions – President Paul Biya left Cameroon on June 7, 2026, for what the Presidency described as a private stay in Europe. He is currently in Geneva, Switzerland.

As of today (July 21), this marks over 44 days since his departure. He has not made any public appearance since the May 20 National Day celebrations.

The Cameroonian government states that President Biya continues to manage state affairs from Geneva, assisted by his team. Officials have described reports of special medical treatment as unfounded.

The opposition party UDC (Union Démocratique du Cameroun) stated on July 18, calling for:

Clearer rules on how prolonged presidential absences should be handled.

Regular updates to the public and Parliament.

Consideration of filling the Vice Presidency position (reinstated earlier in 2026).

President Biya is 93 years old and has led Cameroon since November 1982, making him one of Africa’s longest-serving leaders.
