The French Regional Capitals Project, a significant development initiative, has entered its second phase, bringing with it a wave of optimism and progress for the cities of Bamenda and Maroua in Cameroon. This expansion is a testament to the successful collaboration between Cameroon and France, aiming to enhance urban infrastructure and promote social cohesion through sports.
Phase II of the project marks a pivotal moment for Bamenda and Maroua, as they join the ranks of Bafoussam, Bertoua, and Garoua, which benefited from the first phase. The inclusion of these two cities was officially announced by the French Ambassador to Cameroon, His Excellency Thierry Marchand, in a ceremony that underscored the mutual commitment to development and growth.
The financial commitment from France amounts to 20 million Euros, approximately 13 billion FCFA, earmarked for a variety of projects. These funds are set to transform the urban landscape of the beneficiary cities, with a focus on upgrading sports infrastructure, and constructing markets, roads, and drainage systems. Such enhancements are designed to improve access to markets and other facilities, particularly roads leading to sporting venues.
A notable aspect of this phase is the introduction of SPORCAP, a project with an allocation of 10 million Euros, around 6.56 billion FCFA, dedicated to encouraging the participation of Cameroonian women and girls in sports. This initiative reflects a broader goal of using sports as a vehicle for social integration and empowerment, particularly for disadvantaged groups.
The first phase of the infrastructure project has already impacted over 1.8 million Cameroonians, and with the inclusion of Bamenda and Maroua, the aspiration is to change the lifestyle of at least two million girls by fostering their involvement in sports. The project addresses the challenge of accessibility to sporting facilities and equipment, especially in remote areas, which has been a significant barrier to the advancement of sports in Cameroon.
