Statement of Solidarity with the People of Cameroon and the Advocates of Democratic Transition By the Leadership Institute for Transparency and Accountability (LITA Malawi) Date: 25th October 2025 Contact: info@lita.mw Phone: +27733036492 Website: www.litamw.com Africa at Crossroads: Standing with the People of Cameroon The Leadership Institute for Transparency and Accountability (LITA Malawi) stands in firm solidarity with the people of Cameroon during this critical moment in their democratic journey following the 12 October presidential elections. As advocates for governance, democracy, and human rights across the African continent, we are deeply concerned by reports indicating tensions surrounding the electoral outcome and the incumbent President Paul Biya’s refusal to concede power, despite credible claims of victory by the opposition candidate, Issa Tchiroma. The spirit of democracy lies not in holding elections alone, but in respecting the will of the people expressed through the ballot. The people of Cameroon deserve to have their voices heard, their votes counted, and their transition of power handled peacefully and in accordance with the constitution. Any manipulation of electoral outcomes undermines the very foundations upon which our shared continental aspirations for justice and good governance rest. Africa cannot continue to be hostage to leaders who mistake sovereignty for impunity. Sovereignty must mean serving the people, not suppressing them. Lessons from Malawi: A Model of Peaceful Transition As Africans, we take pride in the example set by Malawi’s 16 September general elections, where Reverend Dr Lazarus Chakwera graciously conceded defeat and peacefully handed over power to his successor, Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika. This remarkable act of statesmanship stands as a model for the entire continent — proof that true strength lies in humility, and true leadership is measured by service, not tenure. Malawi’s example demonstrates that peaceful transitions strengthen nations, attract investor confidence, and enhance continental stability. Cameroon, and indeed all African nations, can draw from this democratic maturity as a way forward in times of political tension. Call to African Institutions and Global Partners We call upon the African Union (AU), ECOWAS, ECCAS, and other regional blocs to act swiftly, diplomatically, and firmly to safeguard democratic integrity in Cameroon. We equally urge civil society, the church, media, and the diaspora to promote truth, peace, and solidarity in defense of justice and freedom. Respecting the will of the people is not foreign interference — it is African integrity. Our Commitment LITA Malawi remains committed to amplifying African voices that seek transparency, accountability, and peaceful governance. We believe that Africa’s future will be secured when its leaders choose character over comfort, courage over convenience, and constitutionality over coercion. We therefore stand shoulder to shoulder with the people of Cameroon, urging all stakeholders to embrace peace, dialogue, and lawful transition as the surest path toward stability and prosperity.
