H.E. Obiang Nguema Mbasogo attends the mass of a 38-year-old priest who suddenly dies
Bishop John Berinyuy Tatah, auxiliary bishop of Bamenda, was spotted today in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea, during the celebration of the Holy Mass of Requiem Body present for the eternal repose of the 38-year-old Reverend Father Fortunato Nsue Esono, Vicar General of the local Church, whose sudden departure has caused great dismay in the Christian community of Equatorial Guinea.
As part of the excellent relationship between the Catholic Church and the State of Equatorial Guinea, the President of the Republic, Head of State and Government, H.E. Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, has joined the people in attending this religious ceremony.
The temple hosted a wide ecclesiastical and civil representation, with the presence of bishops of Cameroon and Gabon, the Archbishop Emeritus of Malabo, Mons. Ildefonso Obama Obono, as well as bishops and vicars general of the dioceses of the country. Presidents of constitutional bodies, members of the Government, officials of the National Office of the PDGE, headed by their Secretary General, relatives and faithful who arrived from different parts of the national territory were also present.
During the homily, the celebrant Archbishop emphasized the human, spiritual, and pastoral dimension of Father Fortunato, defining him as a faithful servant of the Gospel, exemplary priest and man of deep vocation to the service of God and his people.
Born on May 28, 1986, in Mongomo, Fortunato Nsue Esono underwent his priestly training in Equatorial Guinea and Spain, obtaining a doctorate in Sacred Scriptures from the University of Navarra. Throughout his career, he served as rector, chancellor, university lecturer and, since October 2025, Vicar General of the Archdiocese of Malabo.
His legacy remains marked by his pastoral delivery, the formation of new generations, and his contribution to important church projects.
The Church in Equatorial Guinea lifts its prayers for the eternal repose of his soul and gives thanks for the testimony of faith, humility and service he leaves among the faithful.
