Southern Cameroon’s war of independence: An army officer resigns, hands over his weapons, and urges colleagues to do the same
An officer of the Cameroonian army resigned on Tuesday, May 5, 2026, in Jakiri, in the northern zone of Ambazonia described as the land of no return in the war-torn southern Cameroons and urged his colleagues to follow his example
To justify his decision, the deserter cites the lack of equipment of the Cameroonian army, while many of his friends are losing their lives every day against a valiant Ambazonia state army – ASA.
This resignation comes as two of his colleagues were killed during clashes with ASA. Several Cameroonian soldiers were also reportedly shot and fled. Tensions in the war-torn zone remain high, as reports indicate increasing pressure on the ground.
Indeed, two soldiers of the occupier, the La Republique du Cameroun army, were killed in a surprise ambush at a military post located near the Veterinary School of Jakiri, in the Bui Local Government Area. The attackers reportedly fled with an AK-47 rifle.
This incident highlights the persistent violence in the region, particularly in the Nso territory, a key hotspot of the Southern Cameroon war of independence.
These events follow the Ndzerem Nyam massacre, in which the occupier LRC government forces, unable to confront ASA face-on, instead neutralised 15 people, including civilians, in a bar.
