The Cameroonian Passport: A Gateway to Global Mobility in 2024
The Cameroonian passport, a symbol of national identity and pride, has been a topic of interest for those keen on global travel and mobility. According to the latest data from Henley & Partners, as of 15 June 2024, Cameroonian citizens enjoy visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 53 countries and territories. This places the Cameroonian passport 89th in terms of travel freedom, tied with Angola.
The Henley Passport Index, which ranks the world’s passports according to the number of destinations their holders can access without a prior visa, is based on exclusive data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and enhanced by Henley & Partners’ research team. This index is a valuable resource for understanding the power of each country’s passport and the level of access it provides.
For Cameroonians, this means a variety of travel opportunities ranging from tourism and business trips to exploring new cultures and experiences. The ease of travel that comes with visa-free access can also facilitate international business and investment opportunities, contributing to economic growth and global partnerships.
However, the ranking also highlights the disparities in global mobility. Passports from countries with higher visa-free scores offer their citizens more freedom to travel, reflecting the complex interplay of international relations, security concerns, and economic agreements. The Cameroonian passport’s ranking reflects both the progress made and the challenges that lie ahead in improving the country’s global standing and the mobility of its citizens.
As global dynamics evolve, so too will passport rankings and the access they provide. For now, Cameroonian passport holders can take pride in the doors that have been opened to them, and look forward to future developments that may further enhance their travel freedom.
From this, it emerges that Cameroon occupies the 98th place in the world with a visa-free score of 50 (i.e. the number of countries to which a Cameroonian can travel without needing a visa, editor’s note). It is tied for this rank with Angola and Jordan. Compared to 2020, Cameroon has fallen 5 places in this world ranking. Indeed, in 2020, Cameroon occupied the 93rd place in the Henley Passport Index, with 49 countries. It shared this rank with Angola, Burundi, Egypt, Haiti and Liberia.
On a continental scale in the 2021 ranking, the country is ahead of South Africa (58th, with 103 countries), Botswana (67th rank, with 86 countries), Namibia (73rd rank, with 78 countries), Lesotho (74th rank, for 77 countries), in particular. Cameroon still shows a better performance by positioning itself ahead of the Republic of Congo which occupies 100th place, with 48 countries, Ethiopia and Nigeria 103rd rank, with 45 countries, the Democratic Republic of Congo at 106th, for 42 countries, etc.
Let us point out that the Henley Passport Index is the original and authoritative ranking of all the world’s passports according to the number of destinations their holders can access without a prior visa. The index is based on exclusive data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) (the largest and most accurate travel information database) and enhanced by the Henley & Partners research team.
