The Cameroonian Passport: Navigating International Mobility in the CEMAC Zone a 2024 update
The Cameroonian passport, a symbol of national identity and pride, has been a topic of discussion in recent times, especially when it comes to its strength and the mobility it offers to its holders within the Central African Economic and Monetary Community (CEMAC) zone. As of 2023, the Cameroonian passport has seen a significant climb in the global ranking, moving up nine places from its previous position.
This upward movement is a positive sign, reflecting the ongoing efforts of the Cameroonian government to enhance the international standing of its passport. The Henley Passport Index, which provides a ranking of the world’s passports according to the number of destinations their holders can access without a prior visa, placed the Cameroonian passport at 86th out of 104 in 2023. This ranking is a slight improvement over the previous year, where it stood at 95th, granting access to 51 destinations.
In the CEMAC zone, the Cameroonian passport allows for visa-free travel to other member countries, a benefit arising from the region’s collective agreement to ease movement for their citizens. However, when compared to its CEMAC counterparts, the Cameroonian passport is not the most powerful. Gabon leads the pack with its passport ranked 79th globally, offering visa-free access to 58 destinations. It is followed by Equatorial Guinea and the Central African Republic, with Cameroon surpassing only the Congolese passport within the CEMAC region.
The strength of a passport can be a reflection of a country’s foreign relations, economic status, and security measures. For Cameroon, the current ranking indicates room for improvement and an opportunity to negotiate more bilateral agreements that could enhance the travel freedom of its citizens. The government’s diplomatic efforts to forge stronger ties with other nations and improve security protocols can play a crucial role in boosting the passport’s power.
For Cameroonian citizens, holding a passport that ranks lower in the CEMAC zone can pose challenges in terms of global mobility and access to opportunities. However, the recent progress in the passport’s ranking is a testament to the potential for further advancement. It is a call to action for policymakers to continue working towards facilitating greater international access for Cameroonians, which can contribute to the nation’s socio-economic development and global integration.
As the world becomes increasingly interconnected, the value of a passport cannot be overstated. It is not just a travel document but a gateway to cross-cultural exchanges, international education, business opportunities, and personal growth. The Cameroonian passport’s journey up the global rankings is a hopeful indicator of the country’s direction towards a more connected and accessible future for its citizens.
According to the 2024 ranking by Henley & Partners, the Cameroonian passport only gives access to 50 travel destinations in the world compared to 60 for the Gabonese passport, 57 for that of Equatorial Guinea, and 53 for the CAR and Chad. The consulting firm Henley & Partners, based on data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA), has just released the world ranking of passports, 2024 edition. From this document, we learn that the Cameroonian passport allows travel to only 50 countries worldwide without a visa. Which earns it 89th place in the world in this ranking. Compared to 2023, the passport of this CEMAC country has lost power by falling one place. Indeed, according to the 2023 ranking of the firm Henley & Partners, Cameroonian nationals could travel to 51 travel destinations in the world without needing visas.
Cameroon less efficient in the CEMAC zone
The Cameroonian passport ranks 89th in the world with Burundi, Turkmenistan and the Republic of Congo – whose number of travel destinations has increased from 49 to 50 compared to 2023. Compared to its peers in CEMAC (Cameroon, Central African Republic, Congo, Gabon, Equatorial Guinea, Chad), the Cameroonian passport is not the most powerful. The country of Paul Biya, the economic lung of this monetary union, is being robbed of leadership by Gabon. Indeed, according to the Henley & Partners ranking, the Gabonese passport allows visa-free travel to 60 destinations around the world. The country has then added 3 new travel destinations without border entry authorization to its portfolio, unlike the 57 in 2023. This is why this passport ranks 80th in the world among the most powerful passports. On the scale of CEMAC, however, it is the most powerful passport.

Next comes the Equatorial Guinean passport, which ranks 83rd worldwide and allows its nationals to travel to 57 destinations without authorization compared to 55 in 2023. On a sub-regional scale, it is the 2nd most powerful passport behind Gabon and ahead of those of the Central African Republic and Chad. The passports of these two countries are exempt from visas in 53 destinations worldwide. Like their predecessors, the number of destinations for which Central African and Chadian passports are valid without entry authorization has increased. For Chad, there are two new destinations compared to the 53 last year. While for the CAR, there are three new destinations in addition to the 52 in 2023. This increase in visa-free destinations has allowed the two countries to occupy the 86th place worldwide in the ranking of the most powerful passports by Henley & Partners. At the bottom of this ranking, we observe that Cameroonian and Congolese passports are the least powerful in the CEMAC zone. Let us recall that the index of the most powerful passports in the world by Henley & Partners includes 199 different passports and 227 different travel destinations.
